Damaging Shaft Voltages


Damaging voltages are induced on the shafts of AC and DC motors controlled by variable frequency drives (VFD). The extremely high on/off switching speeds of the pulse width modulation (PWM) induce voltages onto the motor shaft. These case studies demonstrate how to effectively measure and then mitigate these damaging voltages before they discharge across the bearings, reducing bearing life and causing costly down time.
