Knowing your Centrifugal Blower

Centrifugal BlowerCentrifugal blowers are mechanical devices designed to move air and other gases. These blowers have the capacity to boost the air stream speed and velocity with the rotating impellers. Such fans are constant volume devices that perform at regular fan speed. A centrifugal blower has the capacity to pump a steady volume stream of air instead of pumping constant mass, which means that system air velocity is fixed despite the inconsistency of the fan mass flow rate.

Centrifugal blowers use impeller kinetic energy or the rotating blade in increasing the air or gas stream pressure which moves them in contrast to the resistance from dampers, ducts and other similar components.

Centrifugal blowers radially accelerate air, which changes the course of the airflow. These blowers are powerful, quiet, dependable, and competent to operate over an extensive series of conditions.

Uses of Centrifugal Blowers

Centrifugal blowers are the most widely used industrial fans and by far, they are the most widespread type of fan used today in the HVAC industry. Generally, centrifugal blowers are cheaper than axial blowers and they are easier in construction.

One of the main uses of centrifugal fans is to cool down internal combustion engines in the automotive industry. The energy of the blower is derived from the generated power by the vehicle engine.

Centrifugal fans are also used to provide ventilation systems and transporting materials or gas for buildings.

They are also functional as both cooling and heating systems, and they are very much suitable for air pollution control and industrial process operations.

In huge manufacturing industries, a series of centrifugal blowers may be required in order to achieve maximum effect.

Centrifugal blowers provide maximum pressure, which is the reason why it is popularly used for production.

How Centrifugal Blower Works

A centrifugal blower has several; fan blades that are mounted around a hub, which turns on a driveshaft that goes directly through the housing of the blower. The gas will penetrate from the fan wheel side, than will turn 90 degrees and then will accelerate. This process is possible because the centrifugal force will flow over the fan blades and will exit through the fan housing.

Centrifugal blowers can generate a significant air volume with minimum vibration required in restricted spaces. These blowers are used in a huge variety of ventilation, heating, air conditioning and clean-room applications.

Centrifugal blowers absorb air in the center and effectively direct the air through a vertical opening in the fan housing. This process is accomplished with the use of an impeller – a vaned disk that boosts flow and pressure of the gas being moved around.

There are single stage centrifugal blowers and multi-stage centrifugal blowers. Single stage centrifugal blowers are used effectively when a uniform flow of air is required like in conveying and ventilation operations and processes. Multi-stage centrifugal blowers on the other hand are useful when there is the requirement for an erratic air flow at a fixed pressure, like in water treatment, chemical gas compression and convection drying. Generally, single stage centrifugal blower employs aluminum impellers, while the multi-stage blowers use impellers made from aluminum, steel or cast iron.

How to Tell if the Centrifugal Blower Needs to be Repaired

When air flowing in the blower is no longer as constant or reliable as they used to, it could time for a routine check up. In most cases these blowers may just require a thorough cleaning process in order to work at theirĀ full capacity again.

There are cases though that repair may be required especially if the functions are not long being delivered as effectively as before.
