Digital Governors Vs. Mechanical Governors

In order to understand the difference between digital and mechanical governors, you must first know their purpose. In a nutshell, the governor is used to maintain a constant speed of rotation of the shaft when the motor load may vary. Otherwise stated, the governor ensures that the generator is always spinning at the correct speed, therefore preventing failure. This device plays an essential role, and there are two different types: mechanical and digital.

Mechanical Governors Versus Digital Governors

The purpose of the mechanical governor is to regulate the maximum speed of the motor, in order to protect the equipment associated. This device also ensures that all parts are fully functional and work properly, without failure. This device uses rotating fly weights in order to control movement – whenever the load is removed from the motor, the speed  automatically increases. Unlike digital devices, mechanical governors use centrifugal force to push out the weights.

On the other hand, digital governors are based on a single hardware platform, which makes them far more convenient. Basically, these are speed control units that provide accurate and efficient speed control, with very fast response to load changes. These governors have several advantages over the traditional mechanical governors:

  • they are especially created to withstand severe environments
  • They are very durable in the long run, they are designed to regulate motor speed and aren’t subject to drift.
  • The Hydro digital governor also comes with a back-up speed and creep detection system that makes the device even more reliable.

The Benefits Of Upgrading To A Digital Governor

When it comes to replacing the classic mechanical governor with a new, digital one, it must be mentioned that there are several benefits that should not be ignored. First of all, the mechanical governor has movable parts which are susceptible to break down, thus resulting in very high maintenance costs in the long run, while the electronic digital governor is maintenance free, because there are no moving parts that may break or wear.

Nonetheless, even if the electronic device breaks down at a certain point, you do not have to worry about replacement part availability, which are extremely hard to find in the case of mechanical governors. All the components are off the shelf, and this is what ensures availability.

Digital governors are also more cost-effective in the long haul, given the fact that they are basically maintenance free and you do not have to worry about replacing any parts. They are very easy to use and maintain over the years, and they can also help you save some money.

The accuracy of the device also plays a pivotal role: it is true that mechanical devices can be reliable and accurate, but the digital ones are definitely superior in terms of accuracy.

In addition to accuracy, the improved system response is another benefit that should be taken into account if you want to upgrade to a digital governor. The fast delivery and quick response are mainly given by the powerful control algorithms, which cannot be found in the traditional, mechanical governors. Besides, the electronic governor is also very versatile both in terms of design and usage, and it requires no mechanical work whatsoever – this is what reduces the installation time, and it also delivers faster commissioning. The older governors did not benefit from this tool, this is why they were considerably slower in response.

To sum it up, despite the fact that both mechanical and digital governors serve the same purpose, they are very different from several points of view – the latter are more reliable, more efficient and significantly more cost-effective in the long run.
